This bowl has been turned from a large burl in a Birch tree. A burl is a tree growth characterized formed a response to stress from injury, disease, or infection. These growths form unique, twisting, swirling patterns in the wood causing dense, knobby shapes to protrude at the bark. While the burl is caused by pain, the outcome is beautiful.
